Pasties prove the perfect way to celebrate the past
Giant pasties were consumed amidst a party atmosphere as a town celebrated a cheese and onion fare which dates back to the 17th century.
Newton Abbot in South Devon honoured the tradition of holding the event in the first week of September, with a parade of a mega cheese and onion and meat pasty through the town yesterday.

The pasties were donated by Farmhouse Pies and Pasties, which has a stall in the town's market every Tuesday. Samples were handed out to hungry shoppers, said Kelly Burridge, who organised yesterday's event on behalf of Newton Abbot Town Council.
She said: "Cheese and onions were two commodities which were brought in from other countries by traders, but now they are staples here, and we like to celebrate that.

"There was a great atmosphere in town during the fair, with live music entertainment including live music, which drew good crowds."
When it first started, the fair was originally a chance for locals to buy food to last them through the winter, but the focus became about fun in Victorian times. It declined over time, but was revived in 1954 and has been going strong ever since.
The festivities continue throughout the week, with a town criers' competition at the clock tower between 10am and 4.30pm on Saturday.
A French market will also be held on Friday and Saturday.
