Pathology is the study of disease in tissues and blood, and includes biochemistry, microbiology, haematology, blood transfusion and histopathology.

Because it takes place in hospital laboratories rather than on wards, it has been described as a 'hidden science' which is vital in the diagnosis and monitoring of many different diseases.

The pathology department at Torbay Hospital employs 88 members of staff and approximately 3.2 million biochemistry tests are carried out every year.

Dr Aabha Sharma, consultant in chemical pathology at Torbay Hospital, said: "The aim of the event is to promote the role of pathology and the work we do.

"The majority of our work is behind the scenes and unknown to patients and members of the public.

"As well as being fun, National Pathology Year will create an opportunity to raise our profile."
