Paul Sturrock: I hope Plymouth Argyle win every game - after mine
PAUL STURROCK hopes Plymouth Argyle win every game for the remainder of the season – but only after this afternoon's clash with his high-flying Southend United.
Sturrock (right) said he was anticipating a 'spicy affair' at Home Park (3pm) as he makes only his second competitive return to his old stomping ground with Southend in an eagerly-anticipated League Two fixture.
-

The Scot admitted he was unsure of what sort of reception he would receive from the Green Army, both as visiting manager but pertinently following his disappointing second spell in charge of the Pilgrims.
Sturrock said he watched out for Argyle's results with 'very keen interest' and that he had a soft spot for the club where his managerial career had been most successful.
The 55-year-old also felt that Argyle under manager Carl Fletcher and new owner James Brent 'were in good hands and being well run'.
But, while he had sympathy for the fans over Argyle's present position of second-bottom in English football's last-chance saloon, Sturrock said his brief was to do his best to get 'three points for Southend'.
United's league form has slipped a little of late, culminating in back-to-back defeats to Shrewsbury (2-1) on January 21 and on Tuesday in a heavy 4-1 defeat to Swindon Town at Roots Hall.
Sturrock told Herald Sport: "I'm very much looking forward to coming down to Plymouth and leaving with three points.
"My job is to get as many wins as I can for Southend and keep us in the promotion hunt.
"After Saturday, I'd love Argyle to go on a sensational winning run right up until the end of the season.
"That would give me a great deal of satisfaction, but only when we've got the right result at Home Park.
"We had a nasty one against Swindon, where they played very well and we played very poorly.
"As I see it, there are five sides looking to be in the top three (automatic) promotion places and Southend have a great opportunity.
"Argyle's need for points is different, but I know they are a much better team than their league position shows.
"They've tightened up a lot under the boy Fletcher, who I signed by the way, so I know he's got a lot of experience from his playing career even if he's still learning the ropes as a manager.
"I can see from Argyle's recent results, particularly at home, that any team coming to Home Park will have to work hard for anything.
"They beat Burton 2-1 and then held a very good team like Crawley 1-1 and also went close against Swindon (Argyle lost 1-0).
"So, I'm very hopeful for Argyle that they can go on and pull away from where they find themselves now."
Sturrock had two spells in charge of Plymouth from 2000-2004 until he joined then Premier League Southampton and in late 2007 when he replaced Leicester City-bound Ian Holloway and spent the next two years in charge of the Pilgrims.
He returned to Home Park in October 2005 as manager of Sheffield Wednesday for a Championship match, but he admitted today's fixture has more edge to it.
"It has all the ingredients to be a spicy one, that's for sure," said Sturrock.
"I'm hopeful the fans will give me a good reception, but you can never tell in football how you'll be remembered.
"I'm still proud of what we did here at Plymouth and my record of not being the manager of a relegated side. I still believe that if I'd been in charge of Argyle, they wouldn't have been relegated (from the Championship at end of 2009/10 season). But, as I say, my job now is to get Southend promoted. Then I want to watch Argyle go on a fantastic winning run."
A PITCH inspection was due to take place at Home Park at 8am this morning ahead of Argyle's League Two game against Southend today (3pm).
The Pilgrims employed gas hot air blowers to hopefully help avoid the pitch freezing and were optimistic the match would beat the weather.
Six of today's 10 scheduled League Two fixtures had last night already been postponed because of frozen surfaces.

“Col, I'll only agree with you if we actually are relegated. Yesterday's result shows that we have fight in us and the skill level seems to be better than earlier in the season. Let's face it, league 2 football is not going to be Barcelona style but we have to believe we can stay up. Belief, confidence, consistency.”

“@bobbybiscuit,
one point gained against high flying Southend could make a real difference come May ,with the great team spirit shown in the second half after going 2 down we will survive ,a couple of months ago this would have been a landslide victory for Southend !! Believe me we are on the up.
Oh and by the way I don"t wear rose tinted glasses ,green tinted YES but rose tinted NO.
Good luck in your job search I hope good fortune smiles on you and your soon restored to the ranks of the Green Army.”

“@alabar1 - Two points lost mate not one gained. Relegation on the horizon. Not at game as cant afford entrance fee - one of the unemployed! Still entitled to give an opinion as listened to radio.
1st half Argyle outplayed and let in 2 goals. Done well to come back but one point is not enough and I bet there are many more who will agree with me. Obviously not you as you have rose tinted glasses.”

“Carl Fletcher said to Radio Devon - "We try and prepare the right way and make sure we do the right things. "We'll do our homework, do our research and prepare properly." - Yep, I see that , thats why Argyle lost today....”
