Pews prove a riveting subject for society talk
THE title of last week's history society meeting – Medieval Pew Ends – maybe didn't set everyone's pulses racing.
It certainly didn't give a sufficient indication of what an interesting evening it would be.
Todd Gray was a brilliant speaker, conveying his enthusiasm for the wide variety of pew ends which exist in Devon – more than any other county except East Anglia.
Of 2,500 bench ends in the county, no two village churches have the same design. Those in North West Devon are the most splendid of all.

Those who carved them remain largely unknown, but their work survives to give pleasure to all who view them.
Those in Hatherleigh's church will certainly be admired with a fresh eye, by those who enjoyed this fascinating evening.
Why not take a look at them for yourself?
