NORTH Devon is, as we all know by now, full of surprises. The churchwarden at Swimbridge just happens to have been curator of photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum, so perhaps it's not surprising that he's succeeded in setting up two wonderful speakers as part of a fundraising programme arranged for St James Church in the village.

The first event features the superb recorder of Devon life and landscape, Chris Chapman, who will present and discuss his work. Chris will take his audience through the various stages of his career, illustrating his passion for photography and our region's rich and varied landscape.

Chris has been documenting local traditional skills since the mid 1970s. Today he is known for his large photographic and film archive of the West Country. His photography has been widely recognised and is represented in both public and private collections, including those of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Arts Council England and the International Center of Photography in New York.

Chris has been much involved in our patch recently, completing a film for the Exmoor Society, which celebrates Exmoor through the life and work of Hope Bourne, and his research continues. This will be a great opportunity to see and hear him talk about many of his iconic images, such as the famous photograph of Jonathan Waterer (recently featured on the BBC One programme Countryfile) and his much loved heavy horses.

The second talk will be given by Robin Ravilious who will show slides of Devon photographs by her late husband and acclaimed photographer James Ravilious. James' images are well known nationally. Many were captured here in North Devon, a place he loved, and many locals cherish happy memories of working with him.

Robin moved with husband James to Dolton in 1972 and shortly afterwards, James was commissioned to record North Devon for the Beaford Archive – work which he continued for 17 years. Robin was deeply involved in James's projects during his lifetime, helping him with books and exhibitions. Since his death in 1999 she has worked hard to bring his work to a wider audience.

The talk by Chris Chapman is on Wednesday, April 24, 7pm for 7.30pm in St James Church, Swimbridge. Refreshments available.

The talk by Robin Ravilious is on Wednesday, May 8, 7pm for 7.30pm in the Old School Room in Swimbridge Churchyard. No wheelchair access. Refreshments available.

Entrance to each talk: £3. Free entry to Friends of St James Church. Visitors can join the Friends on the night.
