Plain packets 'could pay off'
SELLING tobacco in plain packaging could help cut the numbers of young people taking up smoking believes a Devon MP who has welcomed a public consultation on the issue.
Central Devon MP Mel Stride says plain standardised packaging could make cigarettes less attractive to impressionable youngsters and health warnings more visible.
He said: "I want to see a huge cut in the number of children and young people who take up smoking, and will support innovative approaches, such as plain packaging, to achieve this. Australia has passed legislation to bring in plain packaging for cigarettes by the end of this year, and I commend the Government's intention to consult on whether plain, standardised packaging for tobacco would work here."
The Government consultation period, runs until July 10. A website set up by lobby groups has received 30,000 pledges of support from people across the UK,
