Plan for 'extra-care' flats
PLANS to create 50 new "extra-care" homes in St Loyes have been revealed.
The scheme in Exeter, which is one of five across Devon, will include individual, self-contained homes in groups of about 50 flats, purposely designed for people who may need care and support to help them live independently.
Devon County Council say that integral to each scheme is the availability of around-the-clock care, and they are often designed with community facilities such as restaurants and local services.
Extra-care housing is seen as an alternative type of accommodation to traditional residential care for people with care needs, but with greater opportunities to live independently.

The Exeter homes will be in the first phase of providing about 260 flats, managed and owned by the development partners, who are yet to be determined.
Exeter City Council has secured land for 50 affordable flats at St Loyes, and has appointed architects who have designed and costed the scheme.
Plans for the five schemes are all at different stages with development partners identified for some but not all schemes. The county council is currently in the process of identifying partners for the construction, housing management and care and support delivery for each scheme.
Councillor Stuart Barker, the County Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for adult social care, said: "Extra-care housing is still relatively new in Devon, although its popularity is growing.
"Development of more schemes is important if local authorities in Devon are to stay ahead of the growing demand for health, social care, and housing that is purposely designed to allow people to live independently in their own home but that will accommodate people with care needs."
Among the other schemes is one in Tiverton, where the Tiverton Almshouse Trust has agreed to offer their site, Alexandra Lodge, for a scheme of up to 50 flats.
And in Newton Abbott, the council is looking to secure land for a 50-flat scheme as part of a wider development on the old hospital site.
