A HISTORIC pub site could be used for residential housing after another revised planning application was submitted this week.

An application to build four homes where the Blue Monkey Inn used to stand has been made to Plymouth City Council.

The landmark pub on Crownhill Road, St Budeaux, was demolished in 2007 after being unoccupied for seven years and attacked by arsonists.

Vital Homes from Weymouth have applied to construct two four bed houses and another two homes with two bedrooms in its place.

The plans include a parking space for each dwelling and the creation of a new public footpath created within the site.

This latest submission is an update on a 2009 application and, according to the planners, 'has come about as a direct result of responding to the comments received from the residential consultation process.'

The application states: "The intention has been to create a terrace of homes for local people that would make the most of the area.

"Architecturally the aim has been to create an attractive enclosure to the public space whilst adding interest and quality to Crownhill Road."

The Blue Monkey pub had stood on the site since 1798 when it was then called the Church Inn.

The pub closed in 2000 and was torched twice in arson attacks before being demolished in 2007.

All that remains of the pub today is the original hardstandings.

Developers have been unsuccessfully trying to get permission to build on the site since 2002.

This latest application is available to comment on from January 29 on the council's website.

“Weird how these places that do not get planning permision suddenly get attacked by arsonists and therefore become available .
My favourite was the Royal Marine pub in Efford ... for years as a derilict building it was refused to be demolished ,until a 5th of november "accident " made it so bad there was no other reason left than to grant permission . Weird how it goes eh ?
Or what was that one by the garage in devonport ? ... also for many years unavailable for anything .. till arsoned ....
    Still ... cant be a coincedence .”

“your reporter has missed the point three times since 2002 the plans have been thrown out on the grounds that six were to many, and also the historic green was not for there parking this was from the city council and the ombidsman, then the plans were resubmitted for five but still trying to steal part of the green when this did not work the land again got sold, now we have vital homes who submitted a plan for five homes but with parking included within the foot print of the site these were to be cedar clad and steel like the other eye sores in the city, this was again turned down by both the city council and the ombidsman, on the grounds that it was a rehash of earlier plans and out of keeping withe the listed church and green. Now we are told by your paper that plans are going in for four houses with parking within the foot print, as this is a result of responding to the comments received from the residential consultation procress, to this i say poppycock, from day one in 2002 all the residents on the green as well as the church has stated that three family homes were the best option within keeping of the green and church so once,s again vital homes has listened my ****.”
