DETECTIVES have launched an investigation after a resident confronted armed burglars in his own home.

Around three or more men, all with scarves covering their faces, entered a house in Quarry Park Road, Peverell some time between 8pm and 9pm on December 16, say police.

It is understood the group may have used a service lane at the rear of the street before entering the terrace house via an unlocked rear door.

Once inside, the group walked through to the hallway where they were confronted by the shocked owner.

Police say the owner struggled with one of the group, who was holding an air rifle, and was eventually able to wrest it from him.

The group then fled the property through the rear door and back into the service lane. It is not known which direction they then went, though the lane exits at both Peverell Park Road and Trelawney Road.

The resident said he believes another member of the group was also carrying a weapon of some kind.

The recovered air rifle has been sent for forensic examination in an attempt to identify the suspects.

Police said earlier the same night a window at the same property was smashed and this incident may also be linked to the aggravated burglary.

A police spokesman said the owner was very shaken up by the incident but was unharmed.

The spokesman said: "This was understandably a very frightening experience for the resident and we are very keen for anyone who may have been in the area of Quarry Park Road between 7pm and 9pm on that night to come forward.

"In addition, if you saw a group of three or more men leaving the service lane behind that road, and going into either Peverell Park Road or Trelawney Road, then we want to hear from you.

"We would like to remind people that incidents involving weapons are exceptionally rare in Plymouth. At this time, we do not believe this to be a random incident and investigators are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry."

Anyone with information about the incident should call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting crime reference number ED/12/7044.

Three men, all aged 19, have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and released on police bail until January 23, 2013 pending further inquiries.
