PLYMOUTH Argyle have started the search for a director of football to support manager Carl Fletcher.

It follows a recommendation from Colin Sexstone, the former Bristol City chief executive and chairman, who was recently appointed to the Pilgrims' board.

Argyle owner and chairman James Brent said: "Colin was brought to the club for his extensive knowledge of the game.

"He has met with Carl Fletcher and, like the rest of the board, is very impressed with Carl's talent and enthusiasm.

"He has also identified - as we already knew - a lack of relative football experience across all areas of the club. It is a reason why we were so eager to bring Colin to the board.

"We are not talking about pure knowledge. We are talking about the type of football experience that can only be achieved by many years service in the game.

"The board, and Carl himself, feel the best way to address this area at first team level is to appoint a director of football in a supportive role to the football management team."

John Deehan worked as director of football at Argyle during the second half of last season. However, he was not retained in the role when his short-term contract ended.

“why dont they just bring in steve cotrell altogether , if he lives in dorset, would be easier than employing him as an director of football , and he would probably bring in hs experienced back room staff as well, the board have to do something now , we cannot go through another season of worrying if we are going to stay in the football league , thats if we drop in to the relegation zone... and we cannot expect other clubs to do us favours all the time like last season....or are the board just gonna sit , back and watch ourbeloved club die in front of there eyes , the club cannot rely upon loanees all the time they need to get in experienced players in all depts , in the championship days argyles ave attendance was 13 .000 now if were lucky were ave 5;000 doesnt that tell the board something , or are the board not taking any notice , they bemoan about the attendances being down whos fault is it it not ours, someody mentioned if mcauley was still here hed a sacked him by now , no messin, and we all know what dan mcauley was like .. as alan sugars favorite saying , YOUR FIRED................ say no more”

“@plymgeorge1. That remark has brought tears to my eyes. So moving and heart felt. Perhaps you should join us and cut up the oranges for half time. Reminds me of my days in the 60s playing for my local Youth Club team. Manager Reg would have been too busy smoking a fag to find time to make notes. Nobody did that back then, even the pros. Ellis Stuttard might of given a fag to the players at half time if they were winning.”

“What is point in Director Of Football. Sean O'Driscol was here last season and no difference.
Just get players that can score (two loan players won't be missed as not set scoring records alight) and manager. Silly waste of money.”

“This has been tried and it didn't work. Why doesn't Brent just invest in a new manager? It's becoming more and more obvious to the masses, that having acquired HP, his priority is the re-development of the area and not PAFC itself. We all wanted Brent to buy the club because he was by far the best candidate but I'm feeling let down.”

“@Mercenary what a wonderfull management team and coaching staff ,the mind boggles, can just imagine old alabar 1 running well sort off onto the pitch with his bucket of water and Wilf running up and down the touchline barking out instructions and yourself calmly making notes on your fag packet, now would you lot need a director of football,if so i am sure Dave Ciderman Smith is still in the area.”

“Based on comments from JB today it's clear he has no intention of getting rid of CF. With that in mind, getting someone in to assist is the next best thing. We'll have to wait and see if it works or not but here's hoping :-)”
