PLYMOUTH Argyle are resuming their search for a director of football after being snubbed by John Ward.

The 61-year-old was named as the new manager of Argyle's League Two rivals Bristol Rovers yesterday on a contract until the end of the season.

Ward verbally accepted the chance to become the Pilgrims' director of football last Thursday after impressing at his interview.

However, struggling Rovers sacked boss Mark McGhee on Saturday following their 4-1 defeat at York City.

Ward told Argyle officials on Sunday afternoon he would not be moving to Home Park but, instead, would be starting a second spell as Rovers' manager.

He was previously in the Pirates' hot-seat from 1993 to 1996.

Argyle sources have told Herald Sport the club remain committed to appointing the 'right person' as their director of football.

Ideally, that would be done before the January transfer window, when the 20th-placed Pilgrims are expected to shake-up their squad in an attempt to move up the League Two table.

However, the powers-that-be at Home Park are determined not to appoint someone for the sake of it.

Unless Argyle find a suitable candidate to fit their criteria, as the vastly experienced Ward did, they will not rush into a decision.

The same sources have also told Herald Sport that the director of football will be expected to make an input into team selection and tactics.

However, the final responsibility for both will rest with Pilgrims' boss.

Club officials see 32-year-old Fletcher as a young manager of some promise and believe appointing an experienced director of football will assist him in fulfilling his potential.

Rovers have turned to Ward, who was sacked by League One outfit Colchester United in September, after a disastrous start to the season.

They have won only four of their 22 league games, leaving them in 23rd position in the table.

Ward was one of three candidates interviewed by Argyle for the post of director of football last weekend.

He was the clear choice of the appointments panel, which included Fletcher, and a contract was offered to him.

However, Ward was in the Netherlands on business for the League Managers' Association for four days from last Monday.

Argyle had hoped to announce his appointment on Friday, after his return to this country, but all the arrangements were not completed.

It was then expected Ward would travel to Plymouth by train yesterday morning and be unveiled by the Pilgrims as their director of football in the afternoon.

However, the chance to return to Rovers as their manager after the dismissal of McGhee proved too much of a temptation for him.

Ward said: "The excitement was the thing that convinced me that this was the right thing to do

"I had been three months without a job and I then had two choices, which was incredible.

"With my hand on my heart, Plymouth was a great job and a nice job but this one puts my neck on the block. Part of me thinks I'm crazy but part of me is excited about this fantastic challenge.

"I feel I have had to let Plymouth down a little bit but, to be fair, to the people of Plymouth they have been brilliant.

"They knew of my contact here and my affinity with this football club. I had to do it.

"You have some things in life where you think 'I have to do that' and this is one of those things.

"I couldn't turn Bristol Rovers down. Had it been any other football club then I would have probably said 'no' and that I had a commitment to Plymouth Argyle."

Ward will soon come up against Argyle when Rovers play host to them at the Memorial Stadium on New Year's Day.

The Pilgrims will reconsider the merits of the two unsuccessful candidates they interviewed for the post of director of football but are also likely to wait and see whether any new applicants come forward.

The club issued a statement yesterday morning when, without naming Ward, they explained their plans to make an appointment had fallen through.

It read: "Following a detailed interview process involving more than 20 high-quality applicants, we offered the position to someone.

"However, that person is now looking at another appointment so we have decided to look elsewhere.

"We continue to believe in the merits of appointing a director of football and our aim remains to complete the process as quickly as possible.

"However, this is a key role for the club and we will not hurry into a potentially poor appointment."

Herald Sport understands Peter Taylor, the former England caretaker manager, showed some interest in the director of football vacancy but was not interviewed by Argyle.

Taylor, 59, was the national coach of Bahrain until October.

His managerial career has taken him to several clubs, including Leicester, Brighton, Hull and Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, the fans who pay the wages have to continue suffering while CF tries to finish his apprenticeship. 4 points from the drop out of the football league - this is a very dicey game Mr Brent is playing.

    C'mon Mr Brent, 'tis the season to be jolly - give us long suffering fans something to smile about ................. P L E A S E ! ! !”

“I appreciate that his hands were, to some extent, tied when he took over the club but Brent, who must now be wondering why he even bothered to get involved, should have brought someone into the club in Sturrock mould who would have been able to carry the mantle of running the club from top to bottom... This would have allowed the club valuable time to steady itself and move forward in a positive manner.... Rookie owner, rookie management team hasn't, with much hindsight, shown itself to be a wise choice..... This director of football malarkey is just a smokescreen aimed to disguise the fact that they got it wrong the first time round.... Who's going to be the one choosing the man who will take us forward from here ? The blind leading the bleddy blind is the phrase that's flirting around my lips.... Too much indecision and failure to act is keeping Argyle where it is now... Brent would never allowed this fiasco to play itself out in any of his other business ventures...

    MALARKEY ; Nonsense, Rubbish”

“Bristol Rovers due to their poor results like other clubs at the bottom of the second div this year have just sacked their managers. As I read in the Hearld close season CF was on a roling contract. That says to me that we do not have to pay off his contract! Hard as it might seem why not do a Bristol Rovers? Get a new manager in! This performance is similar to the Sturrock situation where we could not get rid of him and moved him upstairs. Then Mariner? Can you believe it at our club? It would be laughable if it was not serious. Keeping Chandwick, Feeney and signing Griffiths, three strikers so called who can't score should in itself justify CF getting the sack. All three very bad decisions. I certainly would not have them in my team.

Before anyone says they work hard that might be fine but they are there to score goals. It is simple and with Mr Brent's limited knowledge of football I am sure he must realise that. We only seem able to score a maximum of one goal in open play.”

“ProudPilgrim - I guess he meant to say '"we're only told what the club wants us to hear" which is about right. The club is a shambles top to bottom yet reading their twitter feed and other online sources you'd think all is rosy, it's anything but.

Back on topic, it's not like the country is awash with ex-managers queuing up to become DOFs. Just do the right thing and bring in a manager to replace the current one who is obviously failing.”

    “@showboater

had this rumour been true - Argyle would be daft, VERY daft not to consider both of them over this Ward bloke

why would they not atleast interview them??

for fear that they would ask for too much money??”
