Plymouth magic man Malcolm Norton hopes others follow suit
HIS ARMY of fans include Derren Brown and Paul Daniels, but scores of Plymouth people have also been left awestruck by magic man Malcolm Norton's talents.
The owner of Top Secret Magic Shop in the Barbican Pannier Market has just scooped Stage Magician of the Year from the Devon Magic Circle. Malcolm, 50, is also the current holder of the Rivera magic circle's Card Magician of the Year for the second year.
He said: "There's a certain irony in that I do very little stage work these days. Ninety per cent is close up at wedding tables and dinners.
"It's fun because it's on a more personal level. I enjoy both though; certain tricks can't be done close up."

But it's the card trick title Malcolm is more proud of.
He explained: "I hate card tricks – I find them boring."
Dad-of-two Malcolm mastered his first magic trick at the age of six, started taking it seriously aged 12 and turned pro at 21.
Over the years he travelled the country showcasing his talents in holiday parks. He settled in Plymouth and bought Jack Cohen's magic and joke shop when the man himself retired.
Then, three years ago he opened his Top Secret Magic Shop, which was branded "the most charming" magic shop in the world by Derren Brown. Paul Daniels and his wife Debbie McGhee have also popped into the shop.
Malcolm w is also president of the Plymouth Magic Circle, which is in the process of rebuilding and is on the look out for new members.
Malcolm explained: "There are lots of people I know at Plymouth University who are into magic. It's just trying to get them in one place.
"Twenty years ago it was a thriving society but the membership has dwindled."
