Motorists using Plymouth's Embankment Road are set to face disruption from tonight as major roadworks begin.

Embankment Road will be closed tonight, this Friday, next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to allow for anti-skid surfacing to be laid.

The work is part of pavement and road surface improvements being carried out to add the finishing touches to the £19 million East End Transport Scheme, which opened in November.

A spokesperson for Plymouth City Council said: "To safely and efficiently carry out the remaining surfacing, Embankment Road's outbound carriageway will be fully closed between Cattedown Roundabout and Langham Place on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 February, from 7pm to 5am."

Anti-skid surfacing, which is laid on top of the normal road surface, will then be applied along the same stretch on Monday 20, Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 February, again between 7pm and 5am each night.

During the work, all Plymstock traffic will be diverted via Exeter Street, Sutton Road, Macadam Road, Maxwell Road and Finnigan Road to Laira Bridge Road.

Bus services to Plympton will stop at St Jude's Road bus stop before heading out of town on Gdynia Way.

The outbound bus stops on Laira Bridge Road and Embankment Road opposite the Astor Playing Fields will be temporarily out of use.

Plymouth City Council residents affected by the works have been contacted direct by letter.

Local diversion routes will be signposted and access to properties maintained.

Plymouth Transport and Highways, the partnership between Plymouth City Council and Amey, say they planned the final works to start in January 2012 to minimise disruption to local businesses and shoppers in the lead-up to Christmas, as well as regular road users.

They say traffic flow on Embankment Road has already been reduced by almost 50 per cent at peak times.

The works are scheduled to be completed by mid-March.

“The only 'job well done' in this entire scheme has been the destruction of local businesses. They've done a wonderful job of that.”

“The new system is a lot better and traffic flows much more freely. Before the works started I would avoid the bottom of embankment road as it was a complete standstill for large parts of the day. Now you can get in and out with relative ease.

But of course no-one on here would ever recognise a job well done. It's just moan moan moan.”

“The report states that this lot is meant to be finished by mid march......Which year is that then?

The traffic infrastructure in Plymouth was way better thought out prior to these so called "improvements" What a stupid waste of millions of pounds of our tax money. Surely someone must be held accountable for all this, it's a proper nightmare.

It's getting worse and we are all being affected by it daily. Not least the businesses that rely on out of town trade. Who'd want to drive into Plymouth and get caught up in all this lot? Traffic lights for one example,,,,A set every 20 yards in some areas. It's awfull. Who designed that!

I'll go the other way towards Exeter thanks very much PCC. We all thought this was going to make Plymouth more attractive to visitors & business investors in the end,,,No it has not! Sod coming into Plymouth & I know for a fact there are many others who view Plymouth as a place to avoid if you have a car or need to use the city road infrastructure in any way. So who's accountable for scaring away all of these people & investors then? Is someone from PCC going to hold their hands up?”

“Luckily I had a lorry with two blokes and a bucket of cement to come fix the highway outside my house. In the 15 minutes they were there they fixed a broken kerb, filled a pot hole, levellled off a couple of uneven slabs and filled a sunken previous repair, that was last week. By next week they way things are going those repairs wil have failed completely. I`m glad I pay my Council and road TAX at least for a few days my street was sound.”

“After the joys of a years worth queueing while the super duper all singing & dancing queue busting routes were created how surprising to see the new bus only closed within weeks of opening for more much needed work(!) the whole road is now closed - do they think of forward planning at all? Why didn't the fabulous designers just do these works at the time when they were causing chaos? Was lucky to get stuck in queues from Maxwell Road to goto Plymstock to find despite the engineers knowing the traffic would be diverted they way didn't they think to increase the tidings on the filter lights from Finnegan Road? Really helpful as always !”
