The dead chickens were discovered just before 5pm on Saturday and police called in.

Police say the culprits broke into the school grounds – which have CCTV cameras – and removed a number of chickens from their coup.

Three youths were arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary cruelty to animals and theft in connection with the incident at the Whitleigh school.

All three have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

But police are refusing to reveal any more details about the accused, including their ages, or how the chickens were killed.

Locals have been left stunned at the news and say the school has been targeted by vandals in the past. Resident Mavis Horswell said: "I can't believe it. It's unbelievable and so sad. They obviously look after the chickens so I expect they'll miss them."

Kerrie Weir said: "We didn't hear anything but we saw the police here. That's really sad. We usually hear everything that goes on."

Tracey Campbell added: "It's disgusting really. How sad. The school is often broken into and vandalised." Brook Green Centre for Learning educates children aged 11-16.

“Isn't harming animals a tell tale sign of a person growing up to be a psychopath/murderer/sadist? Maybe someone should do some sort of assessment and follow up rather than just fining them and releasing them back into our community!!!”

“trots. I expect the parents don't even care what they were up to, let alone know, I honestly believe they were just copying the behaviour of their mums or dads, who I expect we are paying for, and now we pay for the actions of their irresponsibility, which unfortunately will be for the rest of our lives.”

“I totally agree with you TROTS.

These offenders are in need of some serious treatment and I do hope the parents ensure they receive it.

WHY, YES WHY, would someone steal pet chickens from a school and just slaughter them?

The punishment will not be the choice of The Police, it will be down to THE CROWN PROSECUTION SERVICE.

If the parent of one of these "scumbags" has the "spine" to comment on here, I would love to hear what THEY are going to do with them.”

“Whatever happens to the young cowardly thugs should also happen to their parents, bet they didn't know where they were or what they were up to!!

The parents have to take some responsibility for the **** that they bring into this world

    Total scum.”

“The punishment will NOT reflect the crime. They will get a slap on the wrist and maybe a small fine, and this is only the case if they are old enough to charge, if they are under the age of criminal responsibility they will walk free to offend again.

To slaughter these chickens was an act of immense cruelty carried out by three youths or young children for kicks. The teachers at the school will have to cope with the emotional fallout that the children at the school might suffer after hearing this news today.

Are we going to hear the usual excuses that violent video games are to fault for the mindless violence these yobs inflicted on these chickens, or that they come from problem families and society is to fault for their actions, no they are responsible for these actions and the penalty they pay should fit the crime. It is time we as a society removed the kid gloves when dealing with yobs such as this and punishments fitted the crimes, instead of a Police caution or a suspended sentence the culprits should face the birch and a spell in borstal. If they are persistent offenders their parents should also be made to pay compensation to those their offspring have offended against.”

“Utter B*stards! Taking away something that they could never give back, horrific and so sad!
If I had spare cash, I'd buy these kids some more chickens.
I really hope the culprits are sent down for a very long time....”
