Officers said the man’s next of kin had been informed of his death but that he had not yet been formally identified.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said they believed the man may also have been assaulted some days before his death.
A man in his 20s was held in custody last night at Charles Cross police station on suspicion of murder.
