When they visited her home they found her bed had not been slept in.
It is understood she was a regular walker who frequented Plymbridge Woods.
Investigators said a family member found her at the bottom of a 100ft quarry face, a short distance inside a cave.
No cause of death has been given by investigators. However, her death has been deemed as "unexplained" but not suspicious. A police spokesman said: "We are supporting the woman's family at this time and further inquiries are being carried out.
"The case has been referred to the coroner and in due course a file will be sent for him to carry out an inquest.
"A post-mortem has been requested in an attempt to find the cause of death."
