Police funding needs examination
YOUR article of October 17 regarding police funding issues and further cuts highlights the central issue for Police provisions in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for the future.
I do not have a magic wand and will not make promises which cannot be kept.
This whole issue of funding will need to examined rationally by an incoming Police and Crime Commissioner with full consultation with all concerned before Police budget is set by March 31, 2013.
Devon and Cornwall is the largest geographical Constabulary in the country with the largest coastline.

Its population increases by some eight million a year with tourism nearly the same static population of London.
Police activity should not be judged on crime figures alone but by the overall service the police provide year round.
Whoever is elected to the post will have to make a robust and compelling case for a budget increase which takes into account the physical and tourist dimension the Constabulary has to cope with which is unique amongst other areas.
