Police investigate as car crashes into tree

Police are investigating after a car left the road and hit a tree in the middle of the night.

Emergency callers initially reported that people were trapped in the vehicle when it veered off the carriageway at Old Way Road in Wellington, Somerset, at 3.15am on Saturday.

Two fire crews attended, and found the vehicle on fire, but they soon established that nobody was inside.

They used breathing apparatus, hose reels and thermal imaging cameras to tackle the blaze.
