At 5.49am the same morning, Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue and the ambulance service were called to the A381 between Red Post and the Pig and Whistle pub after reports of a single vehicle road traffic accident.
Two teams from Totnes Fire Station arrived to find a car had collided with a tree.
Paramedics had already freed a man from the vehicle and he was taken by ambulance to Torbay Hospital for treatment.
His injuries were not thought to be life threatening."
A spokesman for the fire service said: "It was believed there had been another occupant in the car who may have been thrown free.
"Two fire appliances from Totnes attended to search surrounding fields using a thermal imaging camera and lighting.
"No people were found and it was believed they had left the scene."
A search by the police helicopter and officers on the ground also failed to find any other victims of the road traffic accident.
The road was closed for many hours on Christmas morning while the emergency services worked at the scene and then carried out a search.
The vehicle was recovered by police and taken away for further examination.
A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and on December 26 was waiting to help police with inquiries.
