Plymouth club's licence is reviewed as serviceman is beaten in toilet by three thugs

A SERVICEMAN was left with a suspected broken jaw after he was allegedly beaten by three men in the toilets of a city nightclub.

The incident comes as the bar – The Venue – in Union Street today faces an emergency review of its licence after police said it was associated with "both serious crime or serious disorder".

Police say the 21-year-old serviceman was in the toilets of The Venue at around 3.30am yesterday when he was allegedly attacked.

The first assailant is alleged to have grabbed the victim's genitals, twisting them violently while another suspect is alleged to have urinated on him from behind.

The serviceman remonstrated verbally with the trio, whereupon he claims he was repeatedly punched in the face.

The 21-year-old was later taken to Derriford Hospital where he underwent surgery.

The incident comes less than 48 hours after Devon and Cornwall Police made the application to Plymouth City Council for an expedited review of the premises licence.

In a notice posted on the club's door, the police state they consider the premises to be associated with both serious crime or serious disorder.

On Saturday The Herald reported on how father-of-two Scott Brelsford, 21, and 36-year-old Michelle Goodman were both jailed for 18 months after they were caught on a CCTV camera assaulting a man outside The Venue in August.

Other bars in Union Street which have faced similar emergency reviews in the last three years include Maxine's Bar and Divas Nightclub.

During the review of Maxine's Bar in 2009 – the first of its kind in Plymouth – police said expedited reviews were "only used in exceptional circumstances where there has been either serious crime or serious violence, or both."

Under the legislation, designed to provide a fast track response to serious incidents, the council's Licensing Sub-Committee had to carry out a full review within 28 days.

The licence review was due to take place at the Civic Centre at 10am today.

A 27-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm has been bailed pending further inquiries.
