Police release name of Plymouth tower fall victim

A MAN who died after falling 40ft from a block of flats in Devonport has been named.

Andrew Dann suffered horrific injuries when he landed on a concrete patio at Tavy House, three floors below the window he fell from.

And despite the best efforts of the emergency services the 40-year-old later died in Derriford Hospital.

As reported in The Herald earlier this week, the incident happened at the Duke Street tower block at around 12.30pm on Monday.

Witnesses described hearing shouts shortly before Mr Dann was found on the floor.

About 10 police crews and an ambulance attended and cordoned off the area.

Officers who were on the scene forced entry into the flat from where Mr Dann fell, but found no one else present.

Sgt Alan Livingstone, from Devonport Police Station, was at the block of flats within minutes of the incident happening, having been nearby on another job.

Speaking at the scene on Monday, he told The Herald it was believed the man had fallen from the back of the property on to the patio.

At the time of the incident Devonport residents crowded around the building and came out of their homes, with many calling the emergency services.

One resident said: "There's been a lot of police here, a lot of officers. A few different people called for an ambulance."

Another added: "It was a nasty fall and a long way to go. I saw the police arriving and the ambulance. There's been a lot of commotion."

Mr Dann was taken to Derriford Hospital escorted by two police cars where he later died.

The incident was reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission because police officers arrived at the scene of the tragedy before paramedics.

Such a report is standard when someone dies after they have had any contact with police.
