The woman was crossing Houndiscombe Road, near the Dominos Pizza outlet, when she was allegedly struck by a car forcing her into a barrier and landing on the other side.

Police and paramedics closed off the scene at the Ford Park Road junction while investigations were carried out.

The injured woman complained of left-hand side hip and stomach pains and was taken to Derriford Hospital.

She did not receive any broken bones but was kept in hospital overnight for observations. Her condition is not believed to be serious.

Inspector Ian Milligan, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "It doesn't appear to have been a deliberate incident but we are satisfied that the driver should have been aware they'd been involved in some sort of collision.

"However, we are keeping an open mind and would encourage anyone with information to get in touch."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them on 101.

“I agree the car and driver must be traced, but don't forget the police need to arrest the person who threw her over the barrier as well. This is why I always phone out for my pizza.”

“There must be CCTV there to capture it. As for the driver he should be banned from driving for a very long time and given a long time inside to reflect on what could have been a murder charge.”
