Police detected 1,200 driving offences and issued fines totalling £25,000 after stopping more than 400 trucks in a large-scale road safety operation.

One foreign heavy goods vehicle worth £80,000 was impounded and drivers were found to be failing to correctly operate tachographs, in some cases exceeding the ten-hour limit by as much as eight hours.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency worked together on the three-week operation, which ended this month.

Operation Fatigue pulled over 400 goods vehicles on main roads, almost 180 of them operated by companies outside Great Britain.

The total amount in fines imposed by way of graduated fixed penalty notices exceeded £25,000.

Co-ordinator of the operation, Sgt Richard Gordon, from Camborne said: "Operations such as these send a clear message to rogue operators that we are out there, checking on the condition and use of goods vehicles and will prosecute and prohibit wherever appropriate."

VOSA Area Manager Andrew Sauerzapf said: seizure of vehicles was the "ultimate sanction".

"This has been a very positive and immediate effect on fair competition rules and road safety," he added.

“THe other thing to worry about these days is vehicles sold to people with false mots which would really be mot failures. YOU gotta watch these dodgy car dealers who sell and store vehicle on their home estates and stuff like that. WE once got conned with an old fiesta car that was an mot failure but the scumbag seller had had it falsly mot'd. I think police need to crack down on these garages which give cars false mots simply in order to sell them and then they sell them at their home address and keep them stored on the street.”

“The fact that a vehicle has an MOT does not mean it is roadworthy as that certificate could have been issued some time ago since when an irresponsible owner would not keep a check on things such as tyres and lights. As a lot of accidents are caused by foreign drivers it's good they are being checked on as in many other countries they are not so tight on road safety as we are. As for the driver who was driving for 18 hours he should have received a ban at the very least and his boss should also have got a heavy punishment.”

“VOSA can tell instantly at the roadside via vehicle number plate recognition cameras whether of not a particular vehicle is taxed insured or MOT'd, this has been so successful that there are sugestions that this equipment be installed on fuel forecourts to prevent miscreants buying fuel if their vehicle is not compliant.

There is also a traffic light system that enables them to identify suspect LGV operators in order to focus effort where it is most effective without unduly affecting legitimate operators.

As an LGV operator anything that contributes to road safety and makes the cowboy operators life harder is welcome.”

“Very commendable , its good to see they are stopping foreign vehicles.
Now its just a case of stopping all the cars and motor bikes to see who has valid insurance etc.
2 hours to come up with the documents or the vehicle gets towed and then crushed !! The value of the scrap can pay for the tow , the rest can go to our injured servicemen.”
