Police stop-check operation ongoing in the centre of Plymouth
A JOINT operation spot-checking cars in Plymouth is being carried out today around Central Park.
Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police, representatives of HM Customs and Excise and staff from Plymouth City Council are involved.
-

The operation is based at Home Park on Outland Road and involves motorists being stopped and assessed for potential breaches of a range of offences.
Similar operations in Plymouth in the past have uncovered everything from driving without a seatbelt to unsafe cars, lack of insurance and lack of road tax.
Such operations commonly use automatic number plate recognition and random stop-checks.

“Nobody pays Road Tax, Vehicle Excise goes straight to central government, not on the roads.
And the reason why your insurance is going up is because compensation claims are through the roof.”

“Firstly to Neil Shaw, HM Customs & Excise became HM Revenue & Customs about 6 years ago when it merged with the Inland Revenue.
Secondly , to pogle63, stopping drugs and illegal immigrants from entering the UK is these days the job of UK Border Agency.
Let's get some facts straight before we start voicing our opinions.”

“How about looking into the actions of the insurance companies and the government next as their actions appear to be sinister to say the least. My insurance has climbed by nearly £100 for no claims and an extra year no claims. My road tax increases every year whilst the roads have never been so bad. Whilst I'm at it fuel prices are extortionate”

“Drugs dealers/ burglars/ rapists/ thieves, they all walk too so maybe start setting up pedestrian blocks as well, The fact of the matter is, this needs to be random, not published in the local paper! Let's wait till next week just to see if the Police tell us what they're next move is or let's just avoid central park area completely and get away with it all together!”

“Good effort. I don't mind getting stopped. I'm totally legal. I guess we need to remember that the cops don't set these road blocks up to catch the odd person without a seatbelt. Drug dealers / Burglars / Rapists / Theives - they all drive!”

“Whilst I agree with clearing those who are not legal from the roads, is it really necessary to errect road blocksand effectively bring everyone to a standstill just to find them? The police have better computer checking and cross referencing than ever before so why in the 20th Century do we need road blocks. As for the Customs and Excise would rather see them stopping drugs and immigrants flooding across our boarders instead of looking for pink deisel on our roads. Just seems to me that getting around even when legal these days is just getting worse. This seems to becoming a regular inconvenience, wouldn`t mind saves them money and just costs me fuel and time.”

“BS Hater.
No sanctimonious judgement on my part. If you take a chance, you may get caught. If you do get caught don't whinge about it. The point being there are so few old bill that there are many out there committing serious offences on a regular basis. Lets not get too excited about having no tax and going to an interview. Let's worry about having no tax, couldn't keep up the insurance and the MOT has slipped. Where is the line you choose to draw? How fogiving will you be when you or one of yours is hurt or worse by an uninsured or drunk driver. At what point does the desperate man looking for work accept responsiblity for his actions and use the money from his car for bus far, or taxi? Some of us do!
The car has gone from being the luxury preserve of the rich to the "right " of all to have. If you can't afford to run it lawfully. if you can't stop yourself from drinking, if you don't have a licence it's simple don't drive. There is no grey area save in the circumstances of immediate medical emergency, and even that's debatable.”

“Funky D1
Headhunter
And what about those who cannot through no fault of their own comply with the law, (usually it's more petty points). What about the guy who lost his job 6 months ago and cannot afford to tax his car but takes a chance to get to an interview for example?
Do not tar everyone with you self righteous brushes, life is different for all of us, indeed some do abuse the law purposely but many of those caught will have simply forgotten something, not noticed an illegal tyre (how many of you know the new rules about illegal tyres now??), a split wiper blade.
Bottom line is their are much more important things for these people to be doing, especially as their numbers are being cut.
I have a clean full HGV C+E licence, no convictions or points ever and I am 50. But I will never batter down those who make small mistakes. This action will bring misery to many and only increase the general dislike and distrust of the police felt by many today.”

“Carry on "Coppers". The more you can catch the better for us "Law Abiding" Motorist. We are the suckers that pay for these non insured morons who cost us a fortune in money and other ways. Keep it going D&C Police and all other involved Agencies.”
