In my opinion: Politics would be a better place with no party whips
While it's not been called this, I think few would disagree with my contention that we are witnessing a political earthquake in the UK right now. The Conservative Party is in meltdown; the Prime Minster is not only deeply unpopular with his own party but is widely reckoned to be out of touch with the voters; at least one local Tory MP is hiding in a bunker and no longer willing to defend the party he represents at Westminster; the Lib Dems have already disappeared ahead of them down the political plughole; and, all the while, that political newcomer, UKIP, is storming up the polls.
And yet nobody seems to be doing anything other than sitting back watching; we all seem to be waiting for somebody to show us the way.
For what it's worth I think we should accept that, if it's not already happened, before long, the political voices in this country will no longer be divided into (what we have long called) right and left camps but, instead, they will be either Euro-Federalists or National Democrats. The former will believe in centralised decision-making by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels; they will be politically correct, favouring gay marriage and they will be anti-Christian. On the other hand, those who favour democracy being conducted by the elected Members of Parliament in the individual nation states, will be against our continuing membership of the EU, against gay marriage and they will support our Christian tradition.
I may be a lone voice is suggesting this next plank that I hope the national democrats would adopt, but I will say it, none-the-less: I think there should be no whips. MPs should be free to vote on what I call (somewhat ironically) the CCCP principle. They should decide how to vote according to four criteria: the first being how their Conscience tells them; second, what their Constituents tell them; third, according to their Country's needs; fourth, and lastly, in line with what their Party tells them. I believe this practice would bring openness, independence and transparency to the way decisions are made in Parliament. It would also return respectability to our MPs. And if a government was unable to get a motion passed, then tough.

Isn't that what democracy is all about?
But, to return to the plot, how do we get to this much better system of government?
Well there is currently no main-stream party, other than UKIP, that has any intention of upholding these popular democratic policies.
So as we face this national political emergency, I think UKIP should step forward now and stake its claim to have become the only main-stream party for those who believe in proper national democracy.
This means that it should openly declare that it will be the only pro-democracy party contending the next general election, and think it should do this now.
That looks like being the only hope our country has got left.
