A THREE-DAY fish festival for Brixham could be on the cards after the idea was accepted by licensing councillors.

Fishstock, the port's annual seafood and music extravaganza, is due to be held in the new fish market on September 11 — but organisers want to make it a three- day event in the future.

To do that they need a premises licence from Torbay Council for the fish market and harbour, permitting entertainment and the serving of drink and food.

Festival organiser Jim Portus, chief executive of the South Western Fish Producers' Organisation, told licensing councillors that although the event had been a single day, there were other possibilities.

"The proposal for three days is in order to make changes for the development of the event," he said.

Mr Portus said open days had been held at the old fish market at the August Bank Holiday Monday, and some in the community hankered for their return.

"There are moves in the tourism industry to have a three-day event. Representatives have approached us about this, and it is a possibility that we might do it."

Police licensing officer Neil Stanlake said police had no objection as long as three conditions were part of the licence, to prevent crime and disorder.

He said police wanted two months' advance notice of the event, for it to be limited to three days in a year, and that steps were taken to stop under age drinking.

He said: "These conditions tie things up nicely and we would ask the committee to impose them.

"It is an event that will enhance Brixham, and the police are happy to support it."

The licence was agreed to by the councillors after eight minutes of discussion in private, with the conditions requested by the police included.

Committee chairman Peter Addis said to Mr Portus: "We wish you every good luck with your venture."
