Promote the market and increase sales
IT'S a good idea to think of ways to make Tiverton Pannier Market more winter-friendly and weatherproof.
Every time I pass those stallholders unlucky enough to get the outdoor pitches on a rainy day, I feel sorry for them.
They look cold, people hurry past them, and sometimes they can't even display properly the goods they're trying to sell because the driving rain would spoil them.
So a canvas cover sounds good in theory. I would be concerned, however, that it doesn't look shabby and wonder how light it would be beneath it.

What is also needed, in my opinion, is more activity at the pannier market and more promotion of it.
At the moment, it seems as often empty as in use. There only appears to be something going on three days a week, with the occasional special event.
It would be great to see more specialist sales there, such as for books or Christmas presents or more continental markets.
It also needs better promotion, including a proper website. The current one is terrible: www.tiverton-market.co.uk. I hope it just looks as bad as it does because it is in the process of being updated.
Promotion should also be directed at potential stallholders, as many are probably unaware it can cost as little as £11 and the market even provides the stall, according to the website.
