Protesters from all over the country are gearing up for a mass trespass at the Westcountry site earmarked for the first of a new generation of nuclear power stations.

Hundreds are planning to converge at a weekend protest camp before scaling the fence round land being cleared for the controversial Hinkley C power plant.

The Stop New Nuclear Alliance expects many people to be arrested.

"The government is refusing to acknowledge that its 'new nuclear' strategy is dangerous and expensive so we are being forced to raise our game," said spokesperson Nancy Birch.

But EDF Energy, the French-based company which runs Hinkley B and is bidding to build the country's first nuclear power station for 20 years, said: "We respect the right to lawful protest and understand the impact that this can have on the local community.

"We believe that nuclear as a good part to play in providing low carbon energy for the future."

The firm says it has the support of the majority of local people.

On the Saturday before the trespass, protesters plan to wheel symbolic barrels of radioactive waste through the streets of nearby Bridgwater to highlight what they claim will be the huge stockpile of high-level nuclear waste that will be stored at Hinkley C if it gets the green light.

They are also holding a rally with international speakers planning to attend.

On Monday protesters will attempt to scale the fence around the Hinkley C site and scatter seeds in a symbolic attempt to reclaim the damaged land.
