Pupils Unite To Save Their School
The girls of class 4 at Exeter Steiner School are showing that you're never too young to make a difference to your world, by recording an album to fundraise for their school. The first pressing of the album 'Happiness' sold out on the day it was released, and online sales are also going well. The girls, Marli and Nikita Watkins, and Maeve Salmon are all nine years old and call themselves 'The Lightning Girls'. They came up with the idea for the album themselves, singing mainly traditional songs that they learn in music lessons. One of the songs, 'Blue Headed Wolf', was written by Nikita.
The album and accompanying music video have been released as part of an appeal to save Exeter Steiner School from imminent closure, which would leave over 40 pupils and families without a school the week before Christmas. Jenny Salmon, the school's administrator, said "Our school grew from very small beginnings and we have always tried to keep our costs as low as possible so that we can offer a choice in education in Exeter. However the current financial climate has had a huge effect on the school and the families it serves."

The campaign to raise the £20,000 needed is already well underway, with over £4,500 raised in the past 5 days. Donations and pledges are being gratefully received as well as sponsored events such as a Tai Chi walk on Sunday 16th December, where father and trustee of the school Joe Salmon will attempt to walk the 12 mile Exeter Green Circle Path using only Tai Chi and Qigong moves. The school will also be carolling outside John Lewis in the city centre on Saturday 16th December from 1pm, where the Lightning Girls will also be singing songs from their album.
