Lifeboat and helicopter crews were called to assist a 250- tonne trawler whose stern tube had split.

Salcombe's RNLI crew was summoned just before 8pm on Friday to help the fishing vessel Danielle, which was taking on water 30 miles south of the town's harbour.

Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 106 from Portland was also tasked to attend and was the first on the scene. She placed a salvage pump and winchman on board the stricken craft, a 30-metre vessel based in Brixham.

With the pump maintaining the level of water flooding in, it was decided that the fishing boat should head towards her home port under the escort of the Salcombe lifeboat.

The Salcombe lifeboat escorted Danielle to just south of Berry Head, where the Torbay lifeboat took over.

Exmouth lifeboat crews were also busy on Friday night with the inshore craft launched following reports of a kite surfer struggling in rough sea conditions.

The volunteers located the man within minutes of launching and having brought him back to safety, they returned to pick up his kite but the wind had already blown it ashore.
