Recovering drug addict Lloyd Maddock admits possession

A RECOVERING drug addict was caught by police trying to get rid of a week's supply of heroin down the sink.

Lloyd Maddock, 26, of The Annexe, 103 East Street, South Molton, appeared at North Devon Magistrates' Court on Friday. He pleaded guilty to one charge of possession of heroin and admitted a Bail Act offence, having failed to show up for the hearing which was due to take place a week earlier.

Karen Ball, for the prosecution, told magistrates police had raided Maddock's previous address in Bideford in September last year.

As they entered the house Maddock was found in the kitchen trying to wash seven wraps of heroin down the sink's plughole.

Maddock told police the wraps were his and admitted possession of another small amount of heroin found on a spoon in the living room.

The total amount of heroin found was 891 milligrams.

Tony Dart, for the defence, said his client "has had an affair with heroin over the years but has got his act together and has got clean for a good few weeks now".

He said Maddock's girlfriend had given him an incentive to quit drugs.

At the time Maddock was caught with the drugs he was an addict and the amount seized represented a week's supply, said Mr Dart.

Melanie Wright, from the probation service, told magistrates Maddock has 21 previous convictions.

Recommending he be given unpaid work she said: "He seems to be in a position where he's got his life in order."

Magistrate Roger Jackson agreed and ordered Maddock to complete 60 hours of unpaid work. He did not resentence Maddock for a conditional discharge he was given in November for stealing an iPod.

"The probation say you're clean," said Mr Jackson. "Well done, it's a personal triumph for you."

Maddock was ordered to pay a £20 fine for the Bail Act offence, with £20 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
