Richard Austin's Animal Magic
There was a time around 50 years ago that buzzards were a rare thing in our Westcountry skies, mainly due to environmental issues.
But things have improved immensely and the numbers are now very healthy indeed. This one was in fact part of a falconry display at Escot Park near Ottery St Mary.
I took advantage of the chance to photograph one in full flight – something that proves to be very difficult in the wild because of their intense shyness.
Their unmistakeable call echoing across our green and pleasant land is very much part of our rural landscape.

I have photographed them many times against the sky, so it was a welcome opportunity to capture much more detail on the bird against a distant woodland.
