Richard's triumphant return to stock judging
A RETURN to stock judging reaped a welcome reward for Knowstone's Richard Stanbury at the Beef South West event held at Westpoint.
The 23-year-old beat a strong field from across the region to take the first prize in the Young Farmers Club competition.
"I'd had a bit of time off from it, concentrating on shearing. But I was down there already showing other people's stock," said Richard from The Barton at East Knowstone.
"So I thought I'd enter the judging and I won it. It's always competitive and it was one of the best years.

"In fact, the top three seniors all came from Devon."
The candidates have ten minutes to observe four cattle and then place them in order for qualities like conformation, mobility, depth and fleshiness and then write a two-minute speech explaining their choice.
"The judge has seen them and already placed them, but wants you to tell him your reasons as if he hasn't," added Richard, who has been judging cattle and sheep since his early teens.
His experience and skill has earned him a place on the judging panel for Red Ruby Devons and has already judged at county shows, which he described as "a great privilege".
