CELEBRITY chef Rick Stein's latest culinary venture has opened up for business.

Last night, Mr Stein cut the ribbon on his 130-seat fish and chip eaterie in Falmouth.

Simply called Rick Stein's Fish and Chips, the restaurant, takeaway and oyster bar boasts a similar menu to that of his quayside restaurant in Padstow.

He said: "It's great to be opening in Falmouth. Outside Padstow, it's my favourite seaside town in Cornwall."

A team of designers have given the building a complete overhaul.

Work included redesigning the old shop interior to create an open-plan kitchen and restaurant along with a takeaway. The style echoes the same design as Mr Stein's Fish and Chips in Padstow.

The mezzanine floor has been transformed into an oyster bar, serving fresh River Fal oysters, selected wines and champagne.

Guests at last night's opening included EastEnders actor Steve McFadden, better known as Phil Mitchell.

Mr Stein's inspiration for his flagship seafood restaurant originally came from a restaurant in Falmouth that he frequented during the 1970s.

About 30 staff will work at the new restaurant.

“The Stein effect will be best assessed in about a year's time when it will be clearer the effect his presence has had on local business - good or bad.
Some one mentioned Peter De Savory or 'unsavoury' as he was called locally. He made all sorts of problems to all sorts of people in all sorts of places and we ended up with a theme park on the Land's End which is a disgrace to that formerly beautiful area. He then cleared off to a remote Scottish Island leaving all manner of mess behind him.”

“Sad comments from a few, I recall many years ago where another entrepreneur
submitted many ideas for Falmouth - Peter DeSavory - the debarcle that went on then. Wonderful Mr Stein and look forward to a decent Deli to follow - then a large M&S for top up.
My interest ¿ Family in Falmouth- Better Half from Falmouth and frequent visitor.”

“Theo, Unfortunately our town is going down the pan. A restaurant such as Rick Stein can only be helpful to our dire town, giving jobs to the unemployed. This will encourage other entrepreneurs to visit the town and employ more people and then hopefully attract more tourists to the town as well!

So I say well done Mr Stein :)”
