Road surfaces are worse than in Cairo

MY God! What has happened to this once shining example of a modern city? I moved to Plymouth in 1986 as part of my new career in the Royal Marines.

Being a Scouser by birth on arriving by train to join 42 Commando RM I was struck by the city, it's layout, cleanliness and how easy it was to move around by car, bus and even boat taxi.

Now some 30 odd years on I am ashamed to say our roads are now competing with cities like Cairo. I visit countries across the Middle East and when I come home to my now home city I am truly ashamed of the poor state of the city's infrastructure. The roads across the city suburbs are truly a danger to drivers and pedestrians alike. Plympton is now worse than Suez, a town I am very familiar with due to my present job. Does the city council have shares in the local tyre repair centres?

How can any of the so-called local councillors show their faces in public when we the good citizens of this once proud city have to endure the hideous roads? Not just the dangerous surfaces but the nonsensical road layouts and ever-expanding bus lanes.

Come on! Show true leadership, spend some money on the roads. Not some half-hearted pothole filling in the pouring rain but structured resurfacing works that will last more than a month.

I look forward to response but I won't hold my breath.
