UPDATE: Two arrested under Terrorism Act after 'suspicious package' found in Torquay

Two men have been arrested under the Terrorism Act after after police found a 'suspicious item' at a house in Torquay.

Police have spent much of today searching a house in Lymington Road, Torquay, which required the evacuation of a small number of neighbouring properties.

Lymington Road, opposite the Coach Station, was closed while police investigated the 'suspicious package' which they were alerted to at 11:20am.

The two arrested men were initially held on suspicion of committing criminal damage, but later rearrested under the Terrorism Act.

Some suspect items were discovered which are potentially dangerous, said police.

The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team and the fire service were called to the scene, along with a police search and rescue dog.

Ambulance crews were also said to be on standby.

Police asked Devon County Council to close the road at Parkfield Road and Forrest Road junctions.

Upton Road and Upton Hill were also closed.

The road cordons have now been removed, although police remain at the house.

Police would like to thank local people for their patience and help throughout the day.

The two men, aged 20 and 18 and from Torquay, were arretsed under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act – the preparation of a terrorist act - this afternoon. Both men remain in police custody at this time.
