BOVEY Tracey coach Leigh Robinson has revealed his delight at being appointed manager of Southern League outfit Taunton Town.

Robinson was this week officially appointed as boss of the Peacocks, who finished fifth from bottom in Division One South and West last season.

Robinson, who plans to stay living in Bovey Tracey, has no qualms about stepping up, as he has previously enjoyed success at the same level.

Robinson guided Wellington to the Western League Division One title in 2008-09, and then took Bridgwater Town to the Division One South and West play-offs in 2009-10.

"Because I've had a lot of successes in the Western League with Wellington and the Southern League with Bridgwater, that's where all my footballing contacts are," he said.

"It's a good job to get and a good move for me.

"We've got quite a decent budget, probably about mid-table in terms of the Southern League, but also it's a big town, so we've got a bigger pool of players to pick from.

"It's an attractive proposition for players – and the pitch has gone from being terrible a couple of years ago to being immaculate."

The appointment might raise eyebrows in South Devon, not least in Teignmouth where he had an unsuccessful spell with the town's Carlsberg South West Peninsula Division One East side.

But having coached at Bovey Tracey since his departure from Coombe Valley, Robinson believes he still has what it takes to be a success a full three leagues higher in the football league pyramid.

He added: "It was the long-term plan to get back to this level, and that's how it's proved."
