Plymouth man savagely beaten for refusing to buy drugs in pub toilet

A YOUNG man was left with three fractures around his eye socket and a bone protruding from his gum after he was attacked in a city bar.

Samuel Jones says he was beaten unconscious after he repeatedly refused to buy Valium from a petty dealer in the gents toilet of the Mousetrap bar in North Hill.

The 20-year-old, from Stonehouse, said he was with friends last Friday at the bar at around 1.30am before walking into the gents toilet.

He said: "There were a few people in there, about eight. One was dishing out Valium, trying to sell it. He asked me if I wanted any and kept nagging me while I was going to the toilet. He just kept going on and on.

"My friend came out of a cubicle and all of a sudden it was an argument, because I still didn't want to buy any.

"I turned to walk away near the door and something hit me in the side of my head. That was it for me.

"My friend told me a couple of people jumped on me and began hitting me. The next thing I remember was my friend helping me up and lots of people running in from the pool area to help out."

Lead investigator Detective Constable Helen Batten said initial reports suggest Samuel was knocked through the toilet door into the corridor where he was attacked by a man attempting to sell drugs and another large man.

At Derriford Hospital Samuel was told he had a tripod fracture around his left eye socket. In addition, a large piece of bone was forced from his skull into his upper gum area. Samuel will undergo surgery next week.

He said: "My face is all swollen up on the side. It was so unpleasant to look at that when my Mum and Gran saw it they were in tears."

Samuel said his parents were constantly wary of him going out following a distressing incident in 2007 which saw his then 17-year-old brother Jake Jones stabbed in the chest and arm.

Shaho Ahmed, an Iraqi Kurd asylum seeker, was later charged with attempted murder, but was finally found guilty of malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and imprisoned for four years.

Samuel said: "My family are already quite nervous when I go out because of what happened to Jake."

Investigators say there were a large number of people in the gents toilets and the bar at the time of the incident.

The main attacker was described as white, around 5ft 11ins, slim and aged in his early to mid 20s.

He had short black hair, styled stubble and wore a white jumper with an Aztec design across the chest.

The second attacker was white, around 6ft 3ins tall and of average build.

He was of a similar age and wore a blue T-shirt.
