VOLUNTEERS are being sought to fulfil governors' roles at a Plymouth school.

Following a skills audit in January, Mill Ford School in Ernesettle are looking to recruit additional governors with specific skills to help strengthen the body.

Mill Ford is a school for pupils with severe learning difficulties and complex medical needs. It also supports pupils with autistic spectrum disorders.

The school would particularly like to hear from people who have skills and experience in building, construction, maintenance, finance and law.

Chair of governors, Paul Jarvis, said the roles would suit people wanting to be involved in the running of a school and helping to shape it for the future as well as helping to improve the quality of life for the pupils.

Emphasis was also placed on people who wanted to have a better understanding of how the school works.

As a school governor, duties will include: setting the strategic direction, policies and objectives, approving the budget, reviewing progress against the budget and objectives, challenging and supporting senior staff and playing a part in appointing staff.

No specialist qualifications are needed and it is not necessary to have a family member attending the school or to be from Ernesettle.

Governors sit on one of the sub-committees five or six times per year and are also invited to attend full governors meetings usually three times a year.

Prospective governors must be aged 18 or over and be required to undertake an appropriate criminal record check. They need to be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils at the school.

Anyone interested in finding out more or to arrange a visit to the school, should contact Paul on 01752 295983 or radpro@blueyonder.co.uk.
