FUNDS earmarked for providing a new minibus for Tiverton's Sea Cadets may have to be diverted to pay for a new door and security measures at the unit's headquarters following a break-in.

Less than 48 hours after a successful street collection in Tiverton raised £300 towards the appeal to replace the cadet's minibus, the front door of the hut at the entrance to the Grand Western Canal basin was kicked in by mindless vandals. A second intenal door was also kicked, though nothing appears to have been taken following the break-in which is believed to have occured overnight on Sunday, October 21.

Officer in charge Paul Andrews said: "This is disappointing for the cadets as we want to be spending money on activities for them rather than on security measures." He said a modern reliable minibus was vital to the organisation because as they were not by the sea, they had to travel to the likes of Exmouth and Plymouth to enable the cadets to be able to take part in activities and training.

The money raised by the street collection was kept away from the hut, and estimated costs of repairing the door and improving security at the centre were still awaited, but the figure is likely to outweigh the amount raised through generous donations by the people of Tiverton.
