'Servants' show how to get ready for Christmas
It might not be exactly like Downton Abbey but a Georgian mansion and estate is giving visitors the chance to explore the history of British social hierarchy by experiencing Christmas with the servants.
This year, visitors to National Trust’s Saltram Estate, in Plympton, are invited to join a family event when the domestic areas of the Palladian mansion will be brought to life with the hustle and bustle of a whole host of servants preparing to celebrate the festive season.

Families joining in with the event will meet the various servants and learn about how festive traditions have changed over time, and how different Saltram’s servant Christmas celebrations were from the splendour of the lavish feasting and festivities of the Parker family, who lived at the home for almost 300 years.
Visitors will be able enjoy festive storytelling, decorating gingerbread, making Christmas crafts and joining the housemaids for carols around the Christmas tree with jolly old Saint Nicholas, dressed in his traditional green outfit.
