The absence of injured Plymouth Argyle defender Curtis Nelson has been longer than expected, manager John Sheridan has admitted.

Nelson, 19, has missed the Pilgrims' last six matches because of a groin problem, and it is unclear when he will be ready to return to action.

Nelson has not played for five weeks, since the 0-0 npower League Two draw with Accrington Stanley at Home Park on January 26.

Sheridan admitted: "I don't really know what's going on with Nelse. He has been out a bit longer than I thought it would be.

"I was expecting him back by now but it's just one of those niggling injuries. Nelse knows his own body and he just keeps feeling twinges here and there. I'm sure he will tell us when he's OK."

Nelson had played regularly for Argyle this season, making 25 starts and two substitute appearances in all competitions, before he was left on the sidelines by injury.

Sheridan has, however, revealed that right-back Durrell Berry could be available for the trip to promotion-chasing Gillingham on Saturday.

Berry has been ruled out of the last three matches by a knee injury, with Maxime Blanchard taking over from the 20-year-old at right-back in the Pilgrims' line-up. The role is the third one the Frenchman has filled for the team this term, having played as a holding midfielder as well as in his normal central defensive slot.

Sheridan said: "Durrell has been having a bit of treatment and a bit of rest. He's improving."

Argyle goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin has also started light training after a hamstring injury, which forced his substitution during the draw with Accrington.

The experienced Jake Cole replaced Gilmartin that afternoon, and has started the six matches since then.

Midfielder Jamie Lowry has injured an ankle in training and Argyle are assessing how long he will be out of action.

It is the same ankle which the 25-year-old hurt in pre-season, which meant he missed the first two months of the League Two campaign.

Lowry last played for Argyle in Sheridan's first match as manager, the 2-1 home win against Morecambe on January 12.

He was a non-playing substitute for the next three games, but did not even make the bench after that.

Sheridan said: "Jamie went over on his ankle in training last week. I'm hoping that's not too serious.

"I think it's the same ankle he did during the summer, but not as bad. He has caught it and it's swollen."

A last-gasp goal from Solomon Wheatley saw Argyle's Under-18 side win 2-1 against Torquay United in the Football League Youth Alliance South West Conference at Cullompton Rangers yesterday.

Argyle took the lead with a penalty from striker Tyler Harvey after a cross from Josh Hutchinson was handled.

Torquay equalised before half-time with a shot which took two deflections before ending up in the net and it remained 1-1 until the break.

Argyle controlled the second period and chances came and went for Harvey, Wheatley and Matt Lecointe.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Wheatley latched onto a pass from Lecointe and slotted the ball past the onrushing Gulls' goalkeeper.
