A NORTH Devon retailer has taken the idea of recycling to a new level, fitting out her shop interior using only materials that have been recycled.

Wall coverings have been made from old scaffolding planks and a scaffolding tower. Wooden pallets act as display stands.

The layout is the idea of Kath Kingdon, who is opening KK Design in King Street, South Molton on March 30.

The store will sell bespoke interior furnishings, fabrics, haberdashery items and a range of themed gifts including "upcycled" products made by Kath.

"I love the idea of bringing old materials back to life, giving them a new role that they weren't necessarily designed for," she said.

"For me, restoration is far more satisfying than starting from scratch with new materials, and this approach seems to fit well with the current trend for reusing and recycling as much as possible.

"In the design of the new shop I have used lots of outdoor industrial-type materials, such as scaffolding equipment, pallets and old wooden stepladders with paint splashes, which make really original display units.

"I love the idea of bringing these powerful and robust items into a shop interior, where we are selling something as soft and personal as domestic furnishings and fabrics. It's a great combination."

KK Design started in Kath's bedroom in 2006, moving two years ago to The Tannery in East Street, where Kath has been running successful sewing workshops.

As the business has grown, Kath has been keen to find a retail outlet in the town centre.

She said: "We're now supplying a lot of items for domestic and commercial refurbishments and for clients who are looking for something that is high quality, creative and individual.

"The premises in King Street was available at just the right time, and I'm looking forward to welcoming people to our open day on March 30 from 9am to 5pm.

"I'm delighted to offer all our visitors the chance to try out a lovely selection of sweets from Bon Bons, just over the road in South Molton, which they can enjoy while looking round our new shop."

As well as cushions, bags, purses, book covers and many other items made from recycled fabrics, KK Design also sells a range of new fabrics.

KK Design is the exclusive North Devon stockist for Danish and French soft furnishing companies Lene Bjerre and Sopafra.
