A TEENAGER soon to embark on an aid trip to Africa has knitted jumpers for newborn babies who are given nothing more than old newspapers to keep them warm on their journeys home.

Elsbeth Beard, 14, will take her woollen garments to Uganda, where they will be handed to families who cannot afford to properly clothe their young when they leave hospital for the first time.

The South Molton Community College student was recently at Mark & Spencer, Tiverton, gaining sponsorship for her jumpers to help cover the costs associated with the trip, which is being organised by her school and Amigos, a charity which is working to bring self-sustainability, dignity and hope to the people in the country.

Shoppers responded positively to Elsbeth's appeal for funding and a total of £115 was raised.

Elsbeth, her mum Sarah Robinson and her grandmother Janet Spier, have been busy knitting the jumpers over the summer holidays.

"Fish and chip shop babies are so named as when the newborns are sent home from hospital, they are wrapped in newspaper as the family can't afford anything else to keep them warm," Elsbeth said. "While drinking coffee in Tiverton Marks & Spencer's one morning, we came up with the idea of putting a stall outside to raise money. I would like to say a big thank you to customers and staff," she added.
