SHE is a world top-ten tennis player who hails from Taunton, yet the chances are you have never heard of Lucy Shuker.

That is because the 29-year old is an unheralded star of the wheelchair version of the game, which stages its very own event at Wimbledon during the second week of the Grand Slam competition.

This year, 16 of the best wheelchair players from around the globe have come together to compete in the men's and women's doubles competitions, with Shuker being the only Briton involved.

A talented badminton player as a teenager, she turned to wheelchair tennis after being seriously injured in a motorcycling accident shortly after her 21st birthday. She proved to be a natural at the sport becoming the UK's number one woman player during 2006, a position she has held ever since.

Yesterday Shuker and her doubles partner Daniela di Toro from Australia beat Florence Gravellier of France and Jiske Griffioen of Holland 6-4, 6-4 to make it through to the final tomorrow, when they will face the Dutch number one seeds Korie Homan and Esther Vergeer.

"Ever since I started playing wheelchair tennis in 2003, it has been a dream to play at Wimbledon, so now that I'm here we were determined to make the most of it," said Shuker.

"We'll go away now and talk to our coaches and try to come up with a plan to beat Korie and Esther in Sunday's final. It's obviously going to be tough but we will do our best and will enjoy it."
