A FREE, six-week course introducing young people to karate starts on Monday, February 18.

Torbay Karate Club members are signed up to the loveLIFE campaign, and are pledging 9,000 steps/kicks/punches per class.

The Paignton club also offers a free introductory class to new participants as part of the Herald Express Lovelife campaign.

Now the club, which meets at St Andrew's Church hall in Sands Road, is holding a free, six-week Introduction to Karate Sportivate Course for young people aged 14 to 25 years from Monday supported through Sport England's Sportivate Scheme.

The course runs until March 25 every Monday from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Anybody else over the age of six who is interested in having a go, and who is not in the 14 to 25 year age group, can still try one lesson free on Monday or Friday from 7pm to 8.30pm, or on Wednesday from 7pm to 8pm.

Club secretary Helen Cox (pictured) said: "We have a nice lot of new starters to make them feel comfortable.

"Karate training brings many benefits, not only in terms of self-defence.

"It also helps students to develop confidence, fitness and flexibility, develop inner and outer strength, respect for themselves and others, helps with de-stressing, focus, making friends and gives a real sense of achievement."
