Small business stars head to national award finals

Two Devon businesses will represent the South West in a the national finals of a new awards scheme launched to celebrate innovation and success in small businesses across the UK.

Exeter-based armchair equity-raiser Crowdcube and Devon Dog Boarding, based at Mamhead near Dawlish, were two of four South West Federation of Small Businesses and Streamline awards finalists. They will head to London next month to discover if they are national winners.

Devon Dog Boarding, which was established by Anna Hooke in January last year, was named Young Entrepreneur. Her business offers a home-from-home alternative to boarding kennels and has established a reliable network of Westcountry-based pet-lovers offering holiday accommodation and walks to family pets.

Along with Gloucestershire based advanced manufacturer Versarien, the business was also named joint Area Winner and split a £500 cash prize.

Crowdcube, which has just marked the second anniversary of its launch by Luke Lang and Darren Westlake, won in the best Online Business category. Last month, their venture secured FSA accreditation to become the only regulated crowdfunding platform where investors can become direct shareholders in UK businesses. It has so far raised more than £5.3 million in equity for small and start-up businesses.
