Smokers signing up for Stoptober
SMOKERS are signing up in their hundreds to stub out for a month.
The nationwide Stoptober campaign, which encourages people to quit the habit for 28 days, was launched in Plymouth yesterday.
Smokefree Plymouth lead the campaign providing all the advice and support a smoker needs to get through the month.
Jane Bullard, from Smokefree Plymouth, explained: "Stopping smoking for 28 days means you're five times more likely to stop for good and last year over 160,000 people successfully quit in the nation's biggest mass participation stop smoking challenge ever.

"Last year the stop smoking service saw a large increase in the numbers of people using the service and successfully quitting for Stoptober.
"The service are encouraging everyone to give it a go this year and if people want support or access to medications contact the Plymouth NHS Stop Smoking."
Yesterday, smokers made their pledges and family and friends offered words of support, which were shown on a giant television screen in the city centre.
Along with the health benefits, quitting saves the average smoker over £150 a month.
Fiona Andrews, director of Smokefree South West, said: "It is easier to quit with the support of other people. "Smokers looking to quit can also find excellent free support and advice from their local stop smoking service."
Stoptober provides smokers with a range of free support including a new stop smoking pack, a 28-day mobile phone app and text support with daily updates and quitting advice, detailed tools and tips for coping, as well as the encouragement and support from thousands of people quitting together through Stoptober social media.
Debbie Stark, Plymouth's director of public health, said: "Campaigns such as Stoptober, along with the support provided by stop smoking services, play a huge role in helping people to stop.
"We want every smoker to consider making a quit attempt this October and join the hundreds of people who are feeling the benefits from stopping smoking in Plymouth last year."
Stoptober 2013 starts on Tuesday 1st October and runs for 28 days. For more information and to join the biggest stop smoking challenge of its kind, search 'Stoptober' online.
