South Devon's top rowers take on South Coast's best at Wimbleball

THIS SATURDAY'S 54th South Coast Championship Regatta and 5th South Coast Junior Regatta has attracted a large entry for the one-day event over a 2000 metre course at Wimbleball Lake, a man-made reservoir set high in the hills of Exmoor near Dulverton.

Clubs from the three affiliated associations; the Coast ARA of Kent and Sussex, the Hants & Dorset ARA and the West of England ARA covering Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, from Herne Bay in the east to Falmouth in the west, have clamoured to enter a regatta which marks the climax of the rowing season along the South Coast, writes Hilary Bastone.

The six Championship events are for the Championship winners and runners-up from the three Associations but the Juniors and those not selected are provided with the opportunity to enter a vast selection of supporting events.

The Junior Regatta has attracted 146 entries, the open events 99 and the Championship events 33 which has necessitated 73 races starting at 8.30am.

South Devon crews selected to represent the West of England ARA are the Torquay crew of Ian Wilson, Nick Cleasby, Gary Letori, Mike Cresser and cox, George Lowe, at Men's Senior coxed fours; the Dart Totnes crew of Alex Rowe, Elliot Legg, Ryan Galimore, Simon Kerswell-Jensen and cox, Louise Hawkyard at Men's Junior/Senior coxed fours; and the Dart Totnes A crew of James Lovering, Sam Pettit, Steve Clarke, Meyrick Tooley and cox, Maggie Hawkyard, and the Dart Totnes B crew of Alex Woodward, Matt Vincent, Ben Bryon-Edmonds, Tim Whittet and cox, Fiona Hollingsworth, at Men's Junior coxed fours.

The Championship line-ups:

Men's Senior coxed fours: Coast ARA – Bexhill and Herne Bay; Hants & Dorset ARA – BTC Southampton and Southampton Coalporters; West of England ARA – Exeter and Torquay.

Men's Junior/Senior coxed fours: Coast ARA – Deal, Walmer & Kingsdown and Herne Bay; Hants & Dorset ARA – Poole and Southampton Coalporters; West of England ARA – Dart Totnes

Men's Junior coxed fours: Coast ARA – Bexhill, Shoreham; Hants & Dorset ARA – Christchurch, Lymington; West of England ARA – Dart Totnes A, Dart Totnes B.

Ladies Senior coxed fours: Coast ARA – Hastings and Worthing; Hants & Dorset ARA - Poole and Southampton Coalporters; West of England ARA - Bideford Reds, Falmouth.

Ladies Junior coxed fours: Coast ARA – Bexhill and Herne Bay; Hants & Dorset ARA – Lymington and Poole; West of England ARA – Exeter, Plymouth

Veteran coxed fours: Coast ARA – Eastbourne and Worthing; Hants & Dorset ARA – BTC Southampton and Christchurch; West of England ARA - No entries.
