Squadron to visit jungle memorial
Members of the Westcountry-based Commando Helicopter Force are heading to South East Asia to retrace the footsteps of their comrades whose campaign 50 years ago coined their famous nickname.
The "Junglies" earned their moniker in 1962, when 845 Naval Air Squadron helped confront the incursion of Indonesian communist forces into Borneo.
In March, 20 members of the squadron, based at RNAS Yeovilton, are to tour the battlefields on the island – the finale to 50th anniversary celebrations of 845 becoming a commando helicopter squadron. Sixteen Junglies were killed during the action, and a memorial at Nanga Gaat was erected to honour them.
